5 ways to use Twitter in Business

thisisthesocialwhat:

This is a primer for people within organizations who are looking for practical ways to use Twitter in a business context.

As part of my onboarding series, this guide highlights five ways organizations can start using Twitter right away. I suspect other organizations will relate to a lot of the same challenges we’ve faced at Softchoice in terms of seeing Twitter as a legitimate business tool. (Hint: it is!)

Twitter is a real-time information network that connects you to the latest information about what you and like-minded people find interesting. Twitter is based on 140-character messages called Tweets that people share in real-time.

1. Be a Voyeur

You can get a lot of value from Twitter without signing in or creating an account. Spend the first few days at search.twitter.com looking for things you’re interested in - brands, news sources, vendor partners, customers, prospects - and even your co-workers. Then search for the topics, ideas and pain-points you discuss every day with your customers - you might be surprised what you find.

2. Follow People and Create Lists

Once you’ve found interesting accounts to read, follow them. When you do, you subscribe to their tweets. This also means their updates will appear in your timeline.

You can also create lists of people you follow. For example, you might make a list of co-workers or vendor partners. You also might make a list of your customers, news sources, like industry pundits and news/media. You can share these lists publicly, or keep them private. Over time, you may feel like some accounts just make noise. You can always unfollow someone - that’s okay! The idea is to only follow accounts that you find interesting and bring value to you.

3. Share and Reshare

As a thought leader, you share smart things with your customers every day. so post links to things you you feel are awesome. Stuff like your opinions, articles, solutions to customer problems, and business success stories.

Your challenge is striking the right balance between personal and work stuff. And when you find something that’s worth spreading, reshare it by retweeting it. How often should you tweet? You should tweet only when you have something interesting to say, or are engaging others in conversation.

4. Reach Out and @ Someone

People say lots of things on Twitter, and sometimes you want to say something back. You’ll get the most enjoyment and satisfaction from Twitter when you engage in meaningful exchanges with other people.

So when you’re ready to mention or reply to someone: Be authentic. Be respectful. Be responsible.

These three principles protect your company’s brand and the reputations of your vendors, partners and customers while enabling everyone to share and learn from each other.

5. Take Twitter With You

Twitter is ideal for staying connected with people on the go. Use free or paid twitter apps for mobile devices like iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile to collaborate and update your status wherever you are. View, post and reply to messages, manage your lists and even perform searches.

10 Types of Tweets that Everyone Can Live Without

  1. The Case of the Mondays- “uh, Mondays are the worst #nomotivation”  No one likes Mondays. Nothing good will ever happen on a Monday morning so why are you constantly surprised that you’re not happy on Monday. Please do us a favor and stop tweeting your complaints. It just reminds everyone else that it’s time to go to work.
  2. Anything related to The Bachelor- “OMG! just screamed my ass off at the sight of @SeanLowe09’s tongue insertion #dramatic” I know The Bachelor is on every Monday night but does it really require a weekly live tweet session? Who gives a shit if Sean’s abs are made of steel. The only thing this tweet steals is seconds of my life.
  3. Healthy Eats- “scrambled egg whites sauteed spinach bell peppers onions topped with salsa, strawberries, and banana #tweetwhatyoueat” I’m so happy that you’re trying to be healthy. I get it. But why is it necessary to post a picture of every meal or recipe. I would be much more interested if you were eating a sandwich made out of Doritos Locos Tacos.
  4. I Miss College-  ”Can I go back to college already? Real world sux #wahh”  I see at least 5 tweets a day from post graduates about how they wish they could go back. You know what? You can’t go back and if you do go back, you’ll be the really old person that everyone is scared of. Don’t be that person. It sucks that you’ve graduated but it’s time to move on.
  5. Follow Me! “@britneyspears I LOVE YOU GIRL! please follow me xo” People who think by asking celebrities to follow them and expect a response are batshit crazy. Because not only do they ask one celebrity to follow them, they tend to tweet lots of celebrities with the same request. I have a news flash for you. A celebrity does not give a shit about you. You would not want your news feed filled with middle American housewives so don’t expect them to want the same things either.
  6. Anything Political- ”2nd amendment means something. 1st amendment means something…but not to Obama.” After every press conference or event, politics flares up on Twitter. It’s become a battle ground for who’s right and who’s wrong. The day after an election is the worst. People try attempt to persuade any followers that their party is the correct one and everyone else is an incompetent member of society. No matter which party you side with, you will enjoy reading the quotes that support your candidate and condemn the people who think differently. It makes for a nauseating day for everyone.
  7. The Schedule Tweet- ”Home. Grabbed some milk at the convenience store in my building. Now enjoying snow. Work later” People. I don’t want a recap of what you’re doing today so please help us all and just don’t tell us. I would text you if I wanted to hang out. Giving us a full rundown what you’re doing today is only interesting to you.
  8. Sexy Time- “Retweet this if you had sex already in the New Year”- reposted at 8am New Year’s Day. Yes, that was a real tweet that I’ve seen. Please do not publicize your promiscuous escapades.  I for one, do not wish to participate or imagine you in the act. So please stop blinding my eyes and ingraining that into memory.
  9. Weather Forecasting- “The temperature went up to 57 degrees just like that! Now, I’m hot #wtf” I understand you want everyone to know that you’re hot or you’re cold. When I read weather tweets, I don’t immediately stop and think, “Oh poor thing, she must be so uncomfortable wearing a sweater when it’s 57 degrees outside.” These tweets look for the sympathy card and that is a card I do not wish to purchase.
  10. The Inspirational Quote- “Be the change you wish to see in the world -Gandhi”What I find hilarious is that the people who repost quotes the most are always the least likely people to follow them. You can quote Gandhi all you want but that won’t make you Gandhi.

6 Tips for Being More Visual With Social Media (Infographic)

What does this mean? What started as websites and blogs where we shared our message with 500 to 1,000 words or so quickly moved to micro-blogging platforms like Facebook and Twitter. Even micro-blogs became more multi-media driven as we watched Tumblr take off and YouTube reach more than 4 billion views daily. Pinterest and Instagram are now two of the fastest growing and most engaging social networks.

As social media platforms become more visual, we wind up saying more with less, using images and videos to say what we would with words.

For brands, this shift can represent a massive opportunity. If businesses can learn how to be more visual over social media and use clever visual marketing strategies, they have more chance of sharing their message with greater reach and engagement. That often translates to driving traffic, exposure and sales.

Telling your story with engaging visuals can be easier than you might think, with some simple must-do actions that you can do right now in order to take advantage of the shift. In this infographic, we’ve highlighted six critical tips for creating great visuals for social media.
